The new organization is focused on delivering on its commitments to customers and partners as well as setting the agenda for the future of digital ID technologies. COVID-19: Challenges & Opportunities While COVID-19 has disrupted retail and other mar- kets, Avery Dennison sees both challenges and oppor- tunities ahead. For RFID, opportunity can be found by providing greater visibility into inventory and supply chains, as well as offering touchless shopping expe- riences to consumers. In the last two quarters, Avery Dennison has released new RFID products designed to help retailers meet shopper expectations for safe- ty, as well as e-commerce product availability. An Acceleration of Digital Transformation “We are seeing acceleration of digital transformati- on for brands and companies across the retail seg- ment. COVID-19 has been a catalyst for this accele- ration driving a need for more flexible supply chains as well as a rise in demand from consumers for more transparency over the products they purchase.” said Francisco Melo, Vice President and General Mana- ger, Avery Dennison Intelligent Labels. “We see this having a positive impact on the adoption of digital ID solutions across the retail market”. RFID in the Age of Coronavirus As a result of these trends, RFID and other Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have become a key fo- cus for brands, food manufacturers and retailers. As e-commerce is accelerated, the need for supply- chain agility and speed requires businesses to un- derstand the flow of products, from raw materials and manufacturing to distribution and retail sales. Two New Tags Two new Avery Dennison RFID tags help serve that effort: one aimed at providing electronic article surveil- lance (EAS) functionality at stores; and another at offering greater sensitivity for inventory visibility in dense environments. Brand New: AD-332u8 UHF RFID Inlays Tagged goods, such as jeans or T- shirts stacked on shelves, have his- torically been challenging to read. The company’s new AD-332u8 UHF RFID inlays, which use NXP‘s UCODE 8 chips, are intended to operate well in such dense envi- ronments, ensuring the accurate reading of tagged goods moving through dock doors, or stacked on shelves and being counted with a handheld reader. The AD-332u8 meets the Auburn Laboratory ARC Program‘s Category H require- ments for demanding retail envi- ronments. The Dual-Technology AD-362r6-P Inlay The company also recently released its dual- technology AD-362r6-P inlay, which combines a UHF RFID inlay based on Impinj‘s R6-P chip with an EAS component. Traditionally, RFID and EAS have been deployed as separate technologies with two objectives: RFID for uniquely identifying products and inventory management; and EAS for shrink prevention. Anti-Theft Protection EAS works well at detecting theft attempts near store exits where RFID signals might be blocked or encounter other forms of inter- ference. RFID uniquely identifies a product, which EAS does not, though RFID has faced read-effectiveness challenges at store fronts, where many tags might dwell near a door reader. The disposable RFID tag provides the EAS alarm in the event that an unpurchased item leaves the premises. At the same time, the RFID component enables stores to under- stand which products have been purchased frequently and when to replenish them on the shelf, as well as in the stock room. Broadening Adoption in Food and Healthcare Avery Dennison is focused on bringing more RFID technology users into the ecosystem, as well as on driving adoption for new use cases, such as inventory management and tracking of new food categories. WaveSa- feTM tag AD-251r6-P, for instance, is the first microwave-safe UHF RFID tag, specially de- signed for item-level tagging of chilled and frozen packaged foods. The TÜV-certified tag can withstand up to five minutes of 950- Watt microwave cooking without sacrificing readability or data accuracy. RFID as a Response to COVID-19 RFID is also helping healthcare to respond to the pandemic. Today when supply chain visi- bility and product authentication are more important than ever, RFID technology provi- des end-to-end inventory and item tracking solutions for increased patient safety, trans- parency, accuracy, visibility, and security, starting at the point of manufacture. Avery Dennison has become a member of DoseID, a self-governing healthcare consortium for the management of pharmaceutical products, which is focused on enabling the RFID tra- cking of products destined for hospitals and patients. The pandemic has also been driving new applications, such as tracking PPE and COVID-19 test kits in the supply chain. The Robust AD-456u8 Other recent innovations include tags that enable beauty products to be tagged with smaller, cost-effective on-metal tags. Due to the nature of beauty pro- ducts containing liquid or metalized pa- ckaging, products have previously been hard to tag with RFID and this has now been solved with the robust and high- performing AD-456u8. Keeping Customers Safe Touchless shopping will be a demand from consumers as a result of the pande- mic. Technology that enables purchases and other transactions without requiring people to touch keypads and other ob- jects at stores will become more ubiqui- tous. The company is working to provide unmanned store solutions, along with more automated shopping experiences. Before COVID-19, touchless was cente- red around payments, whereas as a re- sult of the pandemic, RFID technology will doubtless be employed to reduce touchpoints for the entire customer ex- perience. Another element of touchless retail surrounds new delivery models such as curbside pickup/click and collect as well as no contact delivery. The collectibles industry is an example where proving authenticity is at the core of any business in the segment. Counterfeit protection is challenging in industries such as the $3 billion market for numismatics (the collecting of rare coins), as well as the sports memorabilia segment that sits at around $370 billion in value worldwide. CASE STUDY | WORKWEAR MANAGEMENT DECENTRALIZED LAUNDRY SERVICES Challenge: Intelligent Laundry Dispensing Cabinets KEMAS, a Saxon company, is a leading provi- der of automation-oriented solutions based on RFID technology for customers and em- ployees. These so-called self-service solu- tions are particularly useful for optimizing workwear logistics. The aim is to provide em- ployees with the right amount of workwear round-the-clock using UHF RFID technology and intelligent laundry dispensing cabinets while organizing the removal and return of clothes transparently and efficiently. Initial Situation: Lack of a Proper Control System Providing employees with workwear always poses personnel and logistical challenges to a company. Central laundry services are often not manned round-the-clock, and ma- chine-based systems cannot reach the same speed as central laundry services. Often, there are not enough clothing items availa- ble for all employees. This is due to diffe- rent reasons. The result, however, always is dissatisfaction among employees. an RRU4500 RFID reader. All textiles are identified at the supply points during the processes of stocking, collection, return, and disposal. For the continuous manage- ment of the textile inventory, all informa- tion about the workwear items and wea- rer are linked to one another making the flow of the textile goods transparent. This enables the static detection of several transponders within one workwear issue and return process. New clothing items are issued after used clothes have been re- turned. The cabinets serve as a depot, and permanent inventory management is pos- sible. The respective inventory is immedi- ately visible in real time and can be used as an inventory check. Service providers receive separate access rights to stock the dispense cabinets with clean textiles. In addition, individual evaluation reports can be created in order to optimize the work- wear management. Result: Continuous Inventory Kathrein Solutions RFID technology enab- les continuous inventory and provides an overview of the textile inventory in real time. The distribution of workwear via in- telligent dispensing systems also provides an overview of the quantities in circulation and enables to adapt the supply to actual needs. This way, intact and clean workwear can be guaranteed round-the-clock. The number of clothes in circulation can be re- duced, which contributes to a significant improvement in efficiency and reduction in costs. Constant transparency and conti- nuous documentation of the life cycle of the textiles are also made possible. Smartly combined, intelligent laundry dispensing systems reduce personnel time that was spent traveling and searching. Background Supply Chain Transparency: Ca’ del Bosco Ca’ del Bosco Ca’ del Bosco is one of the most modern and advanced cellars in Italy, fa- mous for its exceptional wines. The winery seized the chal- lenge and understood that in order to comply with the new market requirements, there was a need for improved tech- nology application in its own operative flow. As a means to do that, they addressed to our Italian partner SAIT, a company specialized in highly techno- logical traceability solutions. By working to- gether, a project was defined. The main aim of the devised project was to implement a system able to automatically track and trace the entire production process and the supply chain in order to achieve the global traceabi- lity paradigm desired. Solutions: A Transparent Supply Chain The solution follows specific operations du- ring the wine-making process, starting with registering the vineyards in the system. The winemaker can trace back the varieties of grapes to the original vineyard. Inside the warehouse, loading is simplified by using RAIN RFID tagged pallets which identify and register the tents inside. This information is sent accordingly to the correct processing operation. These are fundamental attribu- tes that offer support to the customer du- ring the complex process of vinification, for an accurate selection of various musts and types of wines a recipe requires. Depending on the final product, the wines are trans- ferred to different containers, tracked and identified with RAIN RFID labels. During the labeling phase, through serialization, a unique ID is given to the bottle enabling its traceability outside the cellar, through the supply chain and on the market, facilitating the logistics operations. The trans- mission of the tool identification to the cloud enables the data to be shared. Automation Recommended with RFID The data-linked tracking and tracing of high-va- lue assets allows for the timely refurbishment or replacement after the specified period of use has expired. A classic example of this are tools in a machine or plant of discrete or continuous ma- nufacturing or process technology. If a machine utilizes multiple tools in parallel and the exchan- geable tool stock amounts to a few hundred tools, it quickly becomes clear that the manual recording of the uses is not only very time-consuming and therefore cost- ly, but also potentially prone to errors. Here, the application of contactless and automatable identification technology such as RFID is recommended. If informed in a timely manner about upcoming refurbish- ment inquiries, tool-making and refurbish- ment staff – often the same company or the same in-house department – have the opportunity to optimize their processes and offer their services on better terms. Digital Connectivity If you expand the circle of interested parties beyond the machine operator, it quickly becomes apparent that data reten- tion in the local IT is reaching its limits. Sto- ring and processing the data in the cloud enables data to be made available to diffe- rent users. And there already seems to be a trend emerging here, because more and more machine builders connect their ma- chinery and plants to a cloud. Data Transfer from the Field to the Cloud But how does the data from the field le- vel of a manufacturing machine get to the cloud via the local enterprise network and the internet? Which communication proto- cols have to be used for this? And who takes care of the necessary cloud application? Es- sential for the data transport are so-called IIoT gateways. In network technology, gate- ways are used for protocol conversion, in our case from a fieldbus protocol to a cloud protocol. The industrial gateway variant is especially adapted to the conditions in the industrial sector and convinces with its long- lasting and reliable operation. To meet the different customer requirements for cloud provider, the use of an IIoT gateway from the SIMATIC CloudConnect 7 series (CC712, CC716) is recommended, which offers de- fault settings for the most popular cloud providers during configuration. THE TRACKING CHAMBERS With its shipment verification station Turck Vilant Systems demonstrates in a proof of concept for Merck KGaA Darmstadt that containers with liquids and metal objects can be recorded reliably and quickly in UHF-RFID bulk read operations. The reliable detection of several RFID tags on a pallet is a challenge, particularly when different objects and liquids are involved. At Merck KGaA Darmstadt initial tests on the verification of shipments with conventional RFID-UHF gates showed that not all substances could be read with sufficient speed and reliability. The UHF-RFID experts from Turck Vilant Systems took up the challenge and were able to demonstrate with their shipment verification station that even ethanol containers and randomly oriented tags could be identified reliably and quickly. »Through the proof of concept that we carried out with Turck Vilant Systems we now know that even difficult products can be reliably and consistently detected with the right method.« Yanick Luca Kleppinger | Merck KGaA This is how Merck KGaA Darmstadt has also profited for years from the digitalization megatrend. As part of the digitalization of its own processes, the question was asked in Darmstadt to what extent the recording and verification of deliveries could be automa- ted. In the logistics area, the answer to this question had for years inevitably been RFID. For larger ranges and the simultaneous re- cording of multiple tags with so-called bulk reading, only UHF technology can be consi- dered. However, this technology presents a problem for liquids and metals. Both, liquid materials as well as metal containers such as barrels, play an important role at Merck KGaA Darmstadt. The company therefore had to first of all establish a solid basis of data from which it could be decided whe- ther bulk readings with UHF-RFID could be used at all for the verification of the specific goods and primary products. Yanick Luca Kleppinger, who at that time was working at Merck KGaA Darmstadt as part of his final undergraduate year, exa- mined in his final year thesis the effect of different solvents on bulk detection with UHF-RFID technology. As part of this study Kleppinger also carried out a proof of con- cept with regard to the question how well different chemicals and containers can be identified with UHF-RFID technology. In the test setup for this feasibility study, he tes- ted the technology using examples of seven pallets that reflected the variety of contai- ners and substances. 52 Exhibitor Catalogue · RFID & Wireless IoT tomorrow 2020

Variety of substances and containers tested The first three test pallets contained car- tons filled with glass bottles. The bottles on the first pallet were filled with ethanol, while those on the other two were filled with other solvents. The fourth pallet held ethanol containers made from plastic and pallet five two 200 liter metal drums. Pal- let six carried eight smaller drums made from metal. The seventh pallet was used by Kleppinger to test different containers with powder, bottles, plastic objects and metal drums. The tests with a conventional RFID gate were promi- sing. The detection of the ethanol pallets did however show differences to the detec- tion of pallets with different solvents. Tags fixed to the inside of the ethanol containers in particular could not be reliably detected. The mixed pallet also presented problems for the conventional RFID gate. Shipment verification station uses wave reflection on metal walls The engagement of RFID integration spe- cialists Turck Vilant Systems (TVS) brought a solution. The Turck subsidiary has 20 ye- ars of experience in the integration of UHF solutions in several sectors. Besides its own RFID middleware, TVS uses optimal hard- ware for the application at hand. “Detecting pallets with liquids in an RFID gate cannot be done with a conventional gate setup,” recalls Robert Paulus, the business develop- ment manager at TVS who took care of the proof of concept at Merck KGaA Darmstadt. The tags fixed inside were surrounded by liquids on all sides. As the ethanol still ab- sorbs the waves, the inside tags are not de- tected. “We have had good results with our shipment verification station (SVS) in these kinds of applications, says Paulus. The SVS is a metal box on which the three walls and the ceiling are fitted with UHF read/write heads. The pallet with the objects to be identified is inserted through the remaining opening. “In the SVS we make use of the reflection of the waves on the metal walls. The effect is similar to that of a cabinet of mirrors. The electromagnetic waves are repeatedly re- flected and thus also detect points on a pal- let that cannot be reached by conventional RFID gates.” Exhibitor Catalogue · RFID & Wireless IoT tomorrow 2020 53

On-metal tags use metal as an antenna The test of the tags on metal drums showed on the other hand that the position of the tags was less of a decisive factors. Special on-metal tags were used here, which use the metal drum as an extension of their an- tennas. All nine tags on the pallet were read within two seconds. The test with eleven smaller drums confirmed this result. With all read operations the tags should in all cases be pointing in the same direction as much as possible. The on-metal tags use the drum itself as an extended antenna. Polarity critical for readability The test with the first three pallets show- ed that the three solvents had a different reaction to ultra high frequency waves. While the detection of the 120 tags on the pallet containing the ethanol bottles took 30 seconds, the bottles with different sol- vents could be read in two seconds. The tags on the bottles were read at virtually the same speed as the tags on the car- tons, and so the difference had to be in the properties of the solvent. Literature to date had only mentioned that liquids had a dampening effect on electromag- netic waves. The three liquids had simi- lar viscosities but differed significantly in their dampening properties. Kleppinger looked for a different molecular property that differentiated the three solvents: The result of his study was the polarity of the materials was the critical factor. If this fin- ding can be confirmed with further tests, this will represent a new level of research in future on the effect of liquids on reada- bility with UHF-RFID. Selection and position of the tags critical Besides the factors stated, successful read results also depend on the correct choice of tag. Turck Vilant Systems also provided its support here as well as with their optimum positioning on the bottles, drums or car- tons. The test of the fourth pallet with etha- nol containers made of plastic showed that the key to good readability is the fixing of the tags above the fill level of the ethanol. Polar liquids like ethanol are also reliably detected if the tag is positioned correctly. cept that we carried out with Turck Vilant Systems we now know that even difficult pro- ducts can be reliably and con- sistently detected with the right method.” With a read device like the ship- ment verification station the test pallets examined could be used reliably with all materials for verifying shipments at Merck KGaA Darm- stadt and in very good to acceptable read times for logistical processes. Even with the most difficult substance ethanol, the bulk detection operations with read times of up to 30 seconds were impressive. When using the right on-metal tags, metal containers likewise do not present a problem. The upshot of Kleppinger‘s study and the included proof of concept is that, in additi- on to proving the suitability of RF identifi- cation for processes at Merck KGaA Darm- stadt, they have also shown that the polarity of the liquids is a critical factor for the RFID read result. This finding ought to be consi- dered with future assessments of UHF-RFID applications for liquids. Not every undergra- duate research can claim the discovery of such an impact. Small plastic objects that are filled automatically in cartons are also positi- oned randomly in the cartons.
